A press release issued by the Ministry of Labor – Gaza Strip

In light of the end of the recent Israeli aggression on Gaza Strip, which lasted 11 days in a row with all its cruelty against our civilian people , brave workers, and their economic institutions, and by using the utmost types of its war arsenal aiming at increasing our people’s suffering and targeting by its missiles on the facilities and factories that are considered as the main source of a decent living for our people; The attacks have affected all aspects of life in general and the economic situation in particular.

In addition, the Israeli occupation had significantly affected the economic sector over the past aggressions in previous years and the latest aggression as well. Most of the factories had to stop working during the aggression, which led to huge losses to those facilities, in addition to destroying many factories, companies, and buildings that provide hundreds of job opportunities for our people, as tens of thousands of our workers have lost their only source of income,

and became unemployed, this is added to the number of unemployed people before the recent aggression, a total number of (228,000).

Thus, the private sector loses an essential pillar of its operation, due to the destruction of factories and facilities, which further aggravates and worsens the economic and humanitarian conditions in Gaza Strip, and this is what the Israeli occupation seeks through frequent aggressions aiming at dominating the livelihood of our brave workers, and the economic sector.

Meanwhile, our people are still suffering from the bad effects of the COVID-19, which also continues to plague the economic sector in particular, and the latest aggression has come to increase the suffering of the workers much more, despite we  are believed that the Palestinian economy in Gaza Strip is able to recover again from under the rubble but this needs support and big efforts to create jobs opportunities from under the rubbles also .

Accordingly, we in the Ministry of Labor, and despite the destruction of our main headquarter in Gaza City as you see, which was targeted directly from the Israeli warplanes,  confirm the following:

First: We hold the Israeli occupation the full responsibility on this aggression against the economic and vocational sectors, and destroyed many facilities which affected tens of thousands of our labor by losing their jobs.

Second: We call for establishing an employment and protection fund to  compensate the affected workers.

Third: We strongly request to form an International investigation committee for the crimes against the Palestinian Labor, and all the damaged sectors.

Fourth: We demand to provide urgent aids to all the affected worker.

Fifth: We ask the International and Arabic Labor organizations to take their responsibilities toward the labor sectors.

Sixth: We demand to rehabilate  the headquarter of the MoL, which provides its different services to thousands of workers, business owners, and job seekers.

Last: From our responsibility as a government as we can, we will provide a free health insurance  to 155,000 of the affected workers for six months.
